The oomycetes (Oomycota) are a distinct phylogenetic lineage of fungus-like eukaryotic microorganisms within the Stramenopiles. They are filamentous and heterotrophic, reproducing both sexually and asexually, and include some of the most notorious pathogens of plants, such as those causing late blight of potato and sudden oak death. Originally grouped with fungi due to similarities in morphology and lifestyle, molecular and phylogenetic studies have since placed them with the stramenopiles, which include some types of algae.

Their sexual reproduction involves contact between male antheridia and female oogonia, producing oospores that can overwinter as resting spores. Asexual reproduction produces chlamydospores and sporangia, which release motile zoospores capable of chemotaxis. The group includes both saprophytes and pathogens, with many species causing economically important diseases. The name 'oomycete' comes from Greek words for 'egg' and 'fungus,' referring to the large round oogonia.
The oomycetes have a sparse fossil record, with a possible specimen described in Cretaceous amber. They are sometimes referred to as pseudofungi or lower fungi, and many species are still described as types of fungi in some contexts.
